A drop-in session about controversial plans to potentially build on the green belt is taking place next week.

Redbridge Council is hosting the event at Wanstead Library, Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead, on Tuesday between 5.30pm and 7.30pm to inform residents about its local development framework.

The plan focuses on four options to choose areas to put forward for housing and community facilities.

The options are:

1. Proceed with plans to build on Oakfields Playing Fields in Fairlop

2. Build on land around Goodmayes and King George Hospitals and Ford Sports Ground in Seven Kings

3. Create a “north-south growth corridor” by building up Woodford and Wanstead

4. Develop on green belt areas

Consultation over the plans ends next Monday (December 22).

Cllr Helen Coomb, cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said the council needed to build 1,123 new homes a year to meet the target set by the Mayor of London.

“We know many residents have concerns about some of the options outlined and we know they all have their strengths and weaknesses, but unfortunately, these are the difficult decisions that face us,” said Cllr Coomb.

“We are under increasing pressure to provide much needed homes and school places and as the population increases, the pressure on the borough’s facilities is going to keep on increasing.”

She said without a strong local plan, the borough would leave itself open to developers, who could appeal the council’s decisions to get permission from the planning inspectorate.
