A 47-year-old man is in critical condition following a serious crash on the A406 eastbound.

Vehicles were forced to brake to avoid a stationary car in lane five at around 12.40pm today.

As a result there was a collision involving a van and a heavy goods vehicle between the Waterworks Roundabout and the M11 slip road, South Woodford.

The driver of the van was taken to an east London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Detectives from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating.

They have established that the vehicles braked to avoid a stationary car, which then left the scene before the arrival of emergency services.

Police are appealing for witnesses and would like to speak with anyone who has information regarding this car.

Anyone who saw the collision, or who has dashcam footage, is asked to contact the witness appeal line on 020 8597 4874.

There have been no arrests and inquiries continue.

Drivers should expect delays.
