Dispute over Dial-a-Ride drivers’ drop-off spot outside Redbridge Library
PUBLISHED: 15:00 06 February 2016
A taxi-style service to help transport disabled users around the borough is not doing its job according to the chairwoman of the Redbridge Pensioners Forum.
Previously, Dial-a-Ride drivers dropped forum members directly outside Redbridge Central Library, Clements Road, Ilford, where they attend meetings.
But after drivers received parking fines for entering the restricted area, which is reserved for buses, taxis and bicycles, they now drop people off outside the Kenneth More Theatre, opposite the library.
Chairwoman Angela Banner said she was “appalled” at the lack of priority given to elderly users, and said it has reduced turnout at meetings.
She said: “Many old and disabled people do have walking difficulties.
“Even if there is a crossing they worry about holding up traffic because they are old and frail.
“We have started a petition to ensure drivers can stop outside again.”
In emails shown to the Recorder, council leader Cllr Jas Athwal said he was “sorry” for the difficulties, and confirmed drivers had received penalty charges due to entering a restricted route.
The council was unable to provide a official statement on the dispute by the Recorder’s deadline.
