A charity has put together a healthy eating guide which targets the South Asian community in the borough.

Diabetes UK, in partnership with Tesco, has launched the Enjoy Food Guide, which aims to educate people on how to shop, cook and eat well in Redbridge.

The guide, available in combined English, Urdu, Bengali and Gujarati, offers nutritional advice and recipes, as well as suggesting ways to make traditional dishes healthier.

Over 16,000 people in Redbridge have diabetes but those from the South Asian community are up to six times more likely to develop the type two version of the pancreatic disorder.

Diabetes UK’s diverse communities officer, Juliet O’Brien, said: “Cooking should be enjoyable and fun and something the whole family can get together over. Having diabetes doesn’t mean you should miss out.

“By making small changes you can live a healthier lifestyle without even noticing and this can help improve your diabetes management while still allowing you to enjoy your favourite foods.”
