A WOMAN who died her car was in collision with another vehicle which was fleeing from police has been named.

Rachel Williams, 31, from Leyton, died at the scene.

The police car switched on its lights to pursue the Mercedes at 3.35am on Sunday in Bethnal Green Road.

The Mercedes collided with a Vauxhall Corsa. Four people, including a child believed to be aged 19 months, were taken to hospital. Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and bailed to return to police stations.

The occupants of the black Mercedes left the scene of the crash, near the junction with Vallance Road, Bethnal Green.

A fire brigade crew helped free those trapped in the Corsa. An ambulance spokeswoman said four people were hospitalised, including a man who has a "life-threatening" head injury. He was taken to The Royal London Hospital along with the child and is said to be "critical". A 45-year-old woman was in a stable condition in Homerton Hospital with "very serious injuries including a very serious leg injury".

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old man suffered "minor" back pain in the crash. Scotland Yard's Department of Professional Standards has launched an investigation. Police say this is normal.
