A raft of new CCTV cameras are to be installed around the “number one hotspot in the whole of the borough” for crime.

Residents of York Road, Mansfield Road and Balfour Road, in Ilford, have complained about drug dealing in their area for months, and now a total of 12 cameras are being installed.

John Richards, head of civic pride and enforcement at Redbridge Council, announced the measures at Thursday’s external scrutiny panel.

“It will help us catch criminals, and we can ban them from the area,” he said.

From December five cameras will be installed around York Road, with two existing CCTV circuits being relocated. Another five will be added in early 2017.
