The creator of a crime prevention website which has impressed residents and councillors in South Woodford is hoping it could benefit the whole of Redbridge.

Mark Glazer, 54, developed a South Woodford Neighbourhood Watch site with deputy headteacher Jonathan Furness and the pair, who both live in the area, were runners-up for the Mayor’s Safer Redbridge award last month.

The site, which offers tips on preventing burglary, motor vehicle theft and other common crimes, is tailor-made to be taken on by Neighbourhood Watch (NW) groups around the borough, according to Mr Glazer.

The former NW co-ordinator for South Woodford said: “It could be relevant to anyone in the country and it could then be updated with local news.

“NW works well but it creates pockets of information. What we’re trying to do is create a blanket of information.”

The site could act as a template and then be built up ward-by-ward with local content to create a Redbridge version, according to Mr Glazer.

Brian Mazdon, the chairman of the Maybank Residents’ Association, was so impressed he emailed local police contacts calling for the site to be used borough-wide. Mr Mazdon said: “We thought it would save a lot of time and effort.”

Cllr Richard Hoskins, of Church End ward, said: “It’s a first-class site. It gives information to everyone in the community.”

It includes tabs on subjects from cyberfraud to street safety which lead the user to articles and news items on how to prevent crime.

Mr Glazer said: “It’s so people don’t have to go to 60 different places [for advice]. It’s in one place.”

He oversaw 50 NW co-ordinators in South Woodford for two years but recently lost the position under a shake-up instigated by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime.

He is hoping to get feedback and suggestions on developing the site from ward co-ordinators in Redbridge.

A Redbridge Police spokesman said there aren’t currently any plans to develop a Redbridge-wide Neighbourhood Watch site.
