The River Roding, which flows through Redbridge, has been placed on flood alert by the Environment Agency.
Rain over the weekend, combined with forecast wet weather for much of this week, means a close watch is being kept on the river.
It flows through Wanstead, Woodford and Ilford and in 2000 it burst its banks, flooding around 1,000 homes.
