Redbridge Police are visiting “vulnerable premises”, including mosques, today following yesterday’s attack in Woolwich.

Officers are conducting patrols to reassure the public and “monitoring” events.

In a statement, Redbridge borough commander Det Ch Supt Sue Williams said: “Following on from the shocking incidents at Woolwich yesterday, I want to assure you that Redbridge police are engaging with the community and our key stakeholders.

“We are visiting vulnerable premises on the borough and providing high visibility policing and reassurance patrols.”

London-wide police operations are aiming to prevent public disorder, maintain safety and reduce fear and distress after a British soldier was murdered in a suspected terrorist attack.

The soldier, who has not yet been identified, was hacked to death in a busy street in front of passers-by at around 2.20pm.

One of the attackers was filmed moments after the vicious attack claiming it was “because Muslims are dying every day”.

The two attackers, who were reportedly armed with weapons including a meat cleaver, knife and gun, were shot by police and remain under guard in hospital.

Far-right group the English Defence League gathered in Woolwich later in the evening and attacks on mosques have been reported around the country.

No incidents have been reported in Redbridge but faith leaders have appealed for calm and unity.
