A police officer who initiated a car chase which ended in an Ilford crash has been cleared of gross misconduct.

Pc Andrew Adams carried out a driving manoeuvre which resulted in a car crash, in High Road, in which person was injured on April 28, 2016.

He was today (September 5) cleared of gross misconduct following a three-day hearing.

It was alleged that the officer, who is based within specialist crime operations, carried out a driving manoeuvre when it was “not justified, proportionate or necessary” and also failed to conduct a risk assessment before executing it.

He was also accused of using his “police exemptions” - which exempt emergency vehicles from observing speed limits in certain situations - when not entitled to do so.

This means he was alleged to have breached the standards of professional behaviour in respect of “authority, respect and courtesy”, “orders and instructions” and “duties and responsibilities”.

However the panel reviewed CCTV footage of the incident and were satisfied that Pc Adams was entitled to use his police driving exemptions and had good working knowledge of the investigation at hand.

They also found that the officer had carried out a proper and dynamic risk assessment.

Footage seen by the panel reportedly shows Pc Adams brake continously to reduce the vehicle’s speed up to and at the junction.

It also shows that he had been using sirens and lights to warn other drivers and pedestrians.

The panel therefore determined the allegations against the officer were not proven.
