Police are investigating a spate of brick thefts after homeowners’ garden walls were smashed.
Kevin Wiles, of Goodmayes Methodist Church and Community Centre, Percy Road, Goodmayes, contacted the Recorder after speaking to residents and spotting the vandalised walls near the church.
Thefts are thought to have taken place in Percy Road, Eastwood Road, Douglas Road, Wellwood Road and Atholl Road.
One homeowner, whose front garden wall was ravaged by thieves, said he thought the culprits were striking during the day.
The man, who asked not to be named, said: “Each brick can cost up to about £3 – we’re talking about a thousand pounds worth of damage here.”
He said he thought the thieves were blocking the view of gardens with vans while they knocked in the walls.
“It really cuts your heart, it cuts you deep,” he said.
“One thing you don’t expect is to come home and see your wall has been taken.
“I didn’t even realise brick theft was a thing until I looked into it. All they’ve left me with is dust.”
Mr Wiles has since taken to social media to warn people in the area and urge them to remain vigilant.
He said: “From the mess they have left and the amount of bricks taken, someone must have heard or seen something.
“This is really making our community look dreadful and homeowners are having the hassle and distress of having to have their walls rebuilt and made safe.”
Redbridge police confirmed it was looking into the issue.
Det Ch Insp Holly Simon said: “We have had several reports of theft of bricks and we are currently investigating, if anyone has any information please call 101.”
