Electoral boundaries changes which would have seen the Ilford South constituency abolished could be postponed until October 2018.
Peers voted 300 to 231 on Monday to delay the vote in the House of Lords but could be rejected when it returns to the Common later this month.
Mike Gapes MP for Ilford South said: “I’m very pleased. From my point of view it was very good news that Ilford South will continue as a constituency and I will be standing in the next election.”
Under proposals Ilford South would be split into four with sections going to Ilford North, a new Wanstead and Woodford constituency, East Ham and Barking and Dagenham.
Lee Scott MP for Ilford North said: “I was not surprised in the slightest. The Lib Dems said they would oppose the boundary changes. I have always said that Ilford North and Ilford South should be two separate seats but I think there should be a reduction in the number of MPs.”
