The Met has released a warning for Londoners to guard against targeted jewellery and gold robberies.

Police intelligence from Operation Nugget continues to show a rise of criminal network engagement in “family gold theft”.

The warning coincides with Diwali, beginning today (Thurs), which usually sparks a rise in offences as more jewellery is worn across the city.

The Met have outlined a range of preventative measures including property marking, ensuring any safe is secured to a wall or floor, installing home cameras and burglar alarms, as well as covering jewellery when on the move.

Det Supt Jane Corrigan explained the desirability of gold for criminals is “due to the speed and anonymity with which it can be exchanged for large sums of cash”.

She urged Londoners to follow “our simple prevention advice”.

A daunting £50million of gold and jewellery was stolen in the last financial year.
