One of the three men who carried out the terrorist attacks on London Bridge trained at a fitness centre in Ilford Lane.

Khuram Shazad Butt, 27, trained at the Ummah Fitness Centre, St Luke’s Avenue, Ilford and the gym posted a statement on its door condemning the attacks and urging the community to stand together.

“We at UFC gym are shocked and saddened by the events that occurred at London Bridge and Borough on Saturday night. There is never any justification for indiscriminately killing civilians,” the letter read.

“We have hundreds of people training at UFC gym each week. We are a welcoming and open part of the community.”

Butt, along with two other accomplices, was shot by police eight minutes after the men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and launched a knife attack in Borough Market on Saturday night.

Seven people were killed and 48 people were injured.

The gym said that while Butt did “occasionally train” there, it did not know him well or see anything of concern.

It added that it will of course, help the police in any way it can.

The notice finished with: “In these challenging times it is important we all stand united. We must avoid scapegoating any part of the community.”

The Met Police said that Butt was known to the police and MI5, however, there was no intelligence to suggest that this attack was being planned and the investigation had been prioritised accordingly.

The other attacker, who has been named as Rachid Redouane, was not known.

“Work is ongoing to understand more about them, their connections and whether they were assisted or supported by anyone else,” a police spokesman said.

In connection with the London Bridge attack an address in Ilford was raided in the early hours of this morning.

Flats were also raided in Barking over the weekend and 12 people were arrested.

They have now been released without charge.
