A family was left terrified their house was about to be raided after they were the victims of a carjacking in broad daylight outside their home.

Dad Sohail Akhtar put up the family car for up for sale and had just returned from picking up a potential buyer who had seen the car online.

The man, who called himself Raj Singh, had a look under the bonnet before saying he wanted to take the car for a test drive.

It was then “Mr Singh” reversed the engine of the Ford Galaxy, almost knocked Mr Akhtar to the floor and sped off leaving skid marks down the road.

Mr Akhtar, 42, said: “I’m still very shaken and am in a very bad state of shock. My family and neighbours all say they cannot believe that anything like this has happened.

“They said I’m very lucky to be alive - if I didn’t move out the way he would have run me over.”

The carjacking happened on Sunday at about 5.30pm in Felbrigge Road, Seven Kings.

Mr Akhtar said that the keys to his house were attached to the car keys meaning the family spent the entire night fearing the man would return to raid their house.

The father-of-four said: “The children were all afraid that the guy might come back. I just want people to be aware that this is happening.”

He said that he registered his car for sale on Gumtree about a month ago and last week received a call from the man saying he was interested in the car.

Mr Akhtar picked him up from Goodmayes station, Goodmayes Road, Goodmayes before bringing him back to his house.

“Before I knew it he was in the car and I heard the car revving and then he sped off,” he added.

Also in the car was Mr Akhta’s iPhone 5, his daughter’s iPad, a tool box and jump leads.

The man is described as being between 30-40, about 6ft of medium build and of an Asian background.

• Anyone with information about the car, registration EK56 NHT, should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
