Campaigners are delighted after Redbridge Council installed double yellow lines in Wanstead Flats in an attempt to stop a spate of fly-tipping.

Last month angry residents claimed that the beautiful part of Epping Forest, off Centre Road, had been “absolutely trashed” by rogue traders dumping waste.

Shocking pictures showed mattresses, paint and broken furniture were being fly-tipped four or five times a week.

Fly-tippers were reportedly using cars to shield themselves as they dumped the rubbish.

After consulting with Wanstead ward councillors, the local authority has now painted double yellow lines to try and stop the rogue traders.

A spokeswoman said: “The council has taken action on Centre Road and Lake House Road to solve problems caused by the introduction of resident parking schemes in Newham and Waltham Forest.

“We have introduced double yellow lines with a limited amount of day time parking bays towards the Newham end of Centre Road.

“This should alleviate the safety issues caused by unsafe parking and solve the fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour that has recently been occurring.”

The spokeswoman added that the local authority was liaising with the City of London Corporation (CoL), which operates Wanstead Flats, to ensure it stayed up to date with the problem.

Claudine Taylor, 45, of Forest Gate, who has been uploading photos of all of the fly-tips in Wanstead Flats was delighted with the response.

“If I could have a party to celebrate I would,” she said.

“I feel like we’ve been listened to and I feel grateful for that.

“I have asked Redbridge and the CoL to clear the road of glass, fly tips and the two ft high weeds that have grown in the gutters.

“When that’s done I’ll be really pleased. But seriously it’s great news and a lot safer for us all.”
