Three motorists who paid a corrupt court clerk to wipe driving convictions from their records are facing jail.

Munir Patel, 24, fiddled records and collected bribes from drivers desperate to avoid points on their licence.

He worked in a “public facing role” handling case enquiries but he also updated court cases.

Patel accepted at least £20,000 in backhanders from motorists who had heard of his shady service.

He was jailed for six years in 2011, later reduced to four years after he admitted bribery and misconduct in a public office. His plea prompted an enquiry into who paid Patel.

Reza Chatroodi, 39, of Finchley Road, Finchley, Ali Hussain Mohammed, 31, of Bow Common Lane, Bow and Mubarak Patel, 27, of Colgrave Road, Leyton, who paid Patel “to abuse the system”, were convicted of involvement in the scam at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday after denying the charges.

Chatroodi was found guilty of six charges of perverting the course of justice by the jury.

Hussain Mohammed and Mubarak Patel were each found guilty of one count of perverting the court of justice.

Co-accused Zahid Ali, 25, of Halley Road, East Ham, was cleared of three similar charges.

Patel’s colleagues Karandeep Sanghera, 26, and Parminder Ghatora (nee Dehale), 32, were both cleared of misconduct in a public office.

Chatroodi and Mohammed faced prosecution after they failed to respond to notices when they were caught speeding, claiming they did not receive them.

Their silence prompted their cases to be escalated to court to be prosecuted and summons were duly sent.

Patel put the cases on an “unscheduled list” where it was unlikely they would ever be heard.

Sanghera, of Eric Road, Chadwell Heath, and Dehale, of Windmill Road, Coventry, both denied a single charge each of misconduct in a judicial or public office.

The drivers will return to Southwark Crown Court for sentence next Wednesday.
