Syringes and drug paraphernalia are littering streets in Wanstead.
Conservative group leader Paul Canal said there is open drug dealing in the area and more resources are needed to combat the “menace on society”.
“Discarded syringes are a biohazard that could affect the safety of children, pets and anyone who picks them up,” he said.
Residents have complained about seeing syringes in Falcon Way and Seagry Road.
Labour council leader Jas Athwal said he takes the safety of residents very seriously is calling the chief executive of Redbridge Council to talk about the syringes in the street.
“I will find out what has been reported and what is being done about it straight away,” he said.
“I vehemently care about the borough, that is why I stood as a councillor and I take the safety of residents very seriously.”

Liberal Democrat group leader Gwyneth Deakins said the problem is a symptom of cuts to policing by the government.
She said: “I think the Met are working very hard to tackle this sort of crime and need our support but they need to be properly resourced.”
