A member of staff at Ilford train station was subjected to a foul-mouthed tirade by a young man struggling with alcohol problems, Barkingside Magistrates’ Court has heard.

Mark Kaggwa, 22, appeared at the court in Cranbrook Road on Thursday accused of being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

The court heard the defendant, who pleaded guilty, started swearing at a member of staff who was dealing with a member of the public at the station.

Marcia Evans, prosecuting, said Kaggwa, of Leyton, continued to be abusive to police officers who were called to the station in Cranbrook Road on February 25.

Officers realised he was drunk and he was arrested.

Kaggwa, who apologised for wasting the court’s time, said he had been trying to deal with his alcohol problem.

He said: “I’ve been to alcohol group sessions.

“Things were getting better.

“I was doing well but I fell off and took my frustration out on a member of staff.”

Judge Pradeep Bahri said: “You’ve got to pull up your socks.

“To swear at people in a public place is not the way forward.

“We will take your word for it that you are trying to turn the corner.”

Kaggwa was conditionally discharged and costs were waived.

Mr Bahri said: “Should you decide to commit another offence in the next 12 months, if convicted you will be punished for that and this offence.

“Keep your nose clean.

“You’re a young man, you’ve got better things to do.

“We don’t want to see you again.”
