The campaign to save King George Hospital Accident and Emergency from closure was taken to Downing Street today.
Councillors from across Redbridge, Havering and Barking and Dagenham joined together in a cross-party delegation to deliver a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron urging him to intervene.
Labour’s Cllr Wes Streeting, deputy leader of Redbridge Council and cabinet member for health attended, alongside Opposition Leader Paul Canal.
Cllr Streeting said: “So long as the A&E closure plan remains on the table, I will continue to fight tooth and nail to oppose them.
“Politicians in Westminster should be under no illusions about the strength of feeling locally and the Prime Minister must honour his pre-pledge on A&E, having already broken his promise on the maternity closure.”
Barking, Havering and Redbridge CCGs want to close the A&E at the Barley Lane hospital and centralise services at Queen’s Hospital in Romford.
But campaigners fear the unit will not be able to cope.
