Payday loan company websites have been blocked on all computers managed by Redbridge Council.

The plan was initially discussed at Policy and Resources Committee early last month.

People who now try to access companies, such as Wonga or QuickQuid, on council PCs will be redirected to alternative services.

The plan came into force last Friday.

Councillor Jas Athwal, the council leader, said: “Many people turn to payday loan companies in their time of need but we want people to know that they have more options when balancing their finances.

“The council has now banned access on council computers to payday loan internet sites as a means to encourage people to find financial help responsibly.

“We want to make sure that, when people need financial help, we can offer them realistic and affordable ways to borrow and save money.”
