The number of thefts from cash machines in Redbridge in the past 10 years is one of the highest in London.
Figures revealed Redbridge is ranked sixth highest out of the 32 London boroughs, with 49 thefts from ATMs between 2007 and 2017.
The new data looks at recorded robberies and thefts close to ATMs across the borough.
Across the capital, there was an overall increase of 58per cent in ATM thefts between 2007 and 2017, placing the city 153rd out of 273 areas surveyed across the country.
Commander Amanda Pearson, from Front Line Policing at the Metropolitan Police, said: “Cash point theft can be a very traumatic experience which can have a long-lasting impact on victims.
“The Met is continually working hard to prevent offences occurring, arrest offenders and support victims of crime.
“Please be vigilant and if you see anything suspicious contact police with a description of the people and any vehicle they are using. In the event you witness a crime in progress call 999 immediately. The sooner police are notified that a theft is taking place, the greater the likelihood of solving the crime.”
A spokesman for Redbridge Council said: “The council is committed to reducing crime in the borough and we are working closely with the police to ensure residents feel safe. Earlier this year, the council announced a £1.5 million investment in crime and safety to help protect residents which includes improved street lighting, increased CCTV and a larger enforcement presence on our streets.
“We urge residents to be vigilant when using ATMs, making sure to scan the area before use and to always be aware of anyone standing close by. If you see any suspicious activity around ATMs contact the police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
