A headteacher whose past efforts in turning around a failing school were noted by David Cameron is taking charge of King Solomon High School.

Michael Slater, formerly of Drapers’ Academy in Settle Road, Harold Hill, will assume his new role at the Jewish comprehensive school at the start of next term.

The governors’ decision means the popular interim headteacher Dr Paul Doherty will return full time to Catholic Trinity High School, in Mornington Road, Woodford Green.

Mr Slater, 45, has more than 16 years of senior leadership experience and was acclaimed by Mr Cameron for his work at Drapers’ Academy for turning the school into “one of the fastest improving” in the country.

In a statement released to parents yesterday, he said: “King Solomon High School has the potential to become an outstanding educational institution and I will endeavour to make it the school the entire community wants.”

The news marks the end of an uncertain time for the school following former head Jo Shuter being banned from teaching for a misconduct charge at Quintin Kynaston, in St John’s Wood, her previous school.

She has since been given permission to appeal the ban following a two-year period.

Dr Doherty, who took over from Ms Shuter, said today he wished King Solomon every success in the future.

“If Mr Slater wants any advice and support I am only down the road,” he said.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working at King Solomon.

“I will keep an eye on the school as I am naturally interested in it.”

Dr Doherty, who does not drive, added he was looking forward to reducing his commute each morning.

“The commute has been hard going to two schools. It has been tough,” he said.

Reacting to the news, one parent, who did not wish to be named, said: “I am excited to hear about the appointment of Matthew Slater and hope he continues with the fantastic work that Dr Doherty has carried out over the last 10 months.”
