Drunk host slashed guest’s face at Ilford flat party after ‘two bottles of vodka’

A drunk party host who slashed a guest’s face when he stopped him chatting up his ex-wife has been spared jail.
Tomas Kotay, 25, downed up two large bottles of vodka at his own party in Cranbrook Road, Ilford, before deciding to approach the woman.
When her former husband, Vitalij Golbinovic objected, Kotay grabbed a knife and tried to stab him in the face, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.
Mr Golbinovic was left with a deep cut just an inch from his right eye.
Police and paramedics were called by shocked party-goers to the bash at Kotay’s flat on November 23 last year.
The Slovakian-born construction worker was arrested but slipped in and out of consciousness during police questioning due to the volume of vodka he had consumed throughout the day.
Sentencing him on Thursday, Judge Murray Shanks said: “You were wildly intoxicated and you attempted to hurt a guest at that party.
“The man was lucky to escape without a more serious injury than he had.
“Thankfully there were no children at the party as that would have been a serious aggravating factor on top of the fact you had consumed so much vodka.
“So much in fact you could barely speak to police when they arrived.”
Kotay had earlier admitted a single count of unlawful wounding.
The judge handed Kotay an 18-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 150 hours of community service.
The court heard Kotay has been in the UK for seven years, and has a partner and step-daughter in Latvia who rely on the money he sends back to his native country.
