Drivers on the school run have taken to Twitter to vent following severe delays on an A-road.

Disruption

Thursday September 3 from 5am to Tuesday September 15 at 10pm: The A406 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between Redbridge roundabout and Charlie Brown’s roundabout. Drivers should expect delays of up to 45 minutes on the A406, A12, A13 and A503 at peak times, and are advised to use the M25 instead of the A406 where possible.

Tuesday September 15 to Friday September 18 (nighttime only): The A406 southbound will be closed from Charlie Brown’s roundabout to Redbridge roundabout overnight from 22:00 to 05:00 each night, with traffic diverted via the A1400 and A12.

Friday September 18 from 10pm to Sunday September 20 11.59pm: The slip road from M11 to the A406 southbound will be closed, with traffic diverted via the A406 Waterworks roundabout.

Cars moved at a snail’s pace this morning on the A406 between Woodford Green and Ilford after Transport for London (TfL) announced roadworks and lane closures in Woodford Green.

A TfL statement read: “From September 3 to September 15, drivers are strongly advised to use the M25 instead of the A406 around north east London where possible to complete their journey.”

The work involves revamping the A406 Nightingale and Woodford viaducts in South Woodford.

@nomiSClark said: “Great start to Friday!! Long delays on M11 Southbound before A406! Still got 5 miles of this yet!!”

@DramaQueen221 said: “I’m intrigued by what genius decided to do #roadworks on M11/A406 just as schools go back instead of during hols! Shutting down everything!”

@silestanix said: “Whoever decided to action R/Wks on #A406 nr Redbridge needs a new brain! Y when kids r bk to school?! Y not 1/2 Term?!”

@scrappyf tweeted Ilford North MP Wes Streeting: “Morning wes. Any idea y they started the roadworks on a406 as soon as kids went back 2 school etc?? #gridlock.”

@wesstreeting replied: “I’m sure there is a good reason beyond TFL and common sense not having much in common!”

The work is part of TfL’s £4billion road modernisation plan. The transport body says it will make roads “safer and more reliable”.

Dana Skelley, director of asset management in surface transport at TfL, said: “The A406 is possibly one of the busiest roads in Europe and is used by thousands of families, businesses and holidaymakers every day.

“All this traffic means that we need to keep it well maintained. Waterproofing and repairing the Nightingale and Woodford Viaducts in Woodford is vital work and will prolong their use.

“We apologise for any traffic delays caused and will be working day and night to minimise disruption.”
