Veteran councillor Alan Weinberg has paid tribute to Holocaust survivor Issy Hahn whose funeral is today, saying he was “an great inspiration to so many people”.

Issy died aged 85 at his Clayhall home on Saturday and his funeral will take place at Rainham Cemetery at 2.30pm.

Cllr Weinberg worked with Issy and The Recorder on setting up a memorial for another survivor Leon Greenman in Valentines Park, Ilford.

He hailed the efforts of Issy - a survivor of six concentration camps, three forced labour camps and two death marches – to educate people about his horrific experience.

“He worked tirelessly to ensure the younger generation knew about the horrors of the Holocaust with the hope and the conviction that if we taught them they would not make the same mistakes that occurred in Nazi Germany and Europe,” said Cllr Weinberg.

The funeral is at the cemetery in Upminster Road North, RM13 9SB.
