A controlled explosion was carried out on a suspicious package outside a busy supermarket this lunchtime.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed officers were called to the Tesco superstore in Goodmayes High Road at 12.39pm to reports of a suspicious package.
He said: “Specialist officers attended, the supermarket was evacuated and cordons were put in place while the item was assessed.
“A controlled explosion was carried out at 1.45pm.
“The item was found to be non-suspicious.”
One eyewitness, who was kept in the back of the supermarket while the incident was being resolved, told the Recorder there had been a huge emergency services presence in the area almost immediately.
She said: “There were police vans and ambulances and everything but we’ve been escorted out now.
“It was really, really scary – the most scared I’ve ever been since I’ve lived in this area.
“I didn’t hear any explosion or anything, but no one in the shop really knew what was going on.”
