A flag-raising ceremony was held in Ilford yesterday to mark Commonwealth Day.

Councillors, community groups and charities joined together outside Redbridge Town Hall in Ilford High Road to hoist the flag in honour of the partnership of the 53 member states across the world.

The event was marked internationally, with the Queen also releasing a recorded messaging praising the continued role of the Commonwealth.

Speaking from the Regency Room in Buckingham Palace, she said: “We are guardians of a precious flame, and it is our duty not only to keep it burning brightly but to keep it replenished for the decades ahead.”
