PUBLISHED: 16:10 06 March 2013 | UPDATED: 16:59 06 March 2013

A bus stop in Clayhall was destroyed in a car crash earlier today.

An elderly driver is believed to have mounted the kerb in Clayhall Avenue and crashed into the bus stop post and then a wall around 11am.

The driver, believed to be in his 70s, had no visible injuries but he was taken by ambulance to Queen’s Hospital, in Romford, to be checked over.

Hainault firefighters were called to a fuel spillage at the scene.

Firefighter Cliff Ashton said: “We believe he came over the hill near The Unicorn pub and clipped a car.

“He mounted the kerb, took the bus stop out and hit a wall.

“The driver was walking after the accident and we made sure the vehicle was safe before handing over to the police.”

Part of Clayhall Avenue was closed while the debris was cleared but it has now reopened.
