A women’s’ choir has won an award at the UK’s oldest music and drama festival.

The Woodford Singers took home the Throne Challenge Cup on the first day of the Stratford and East London Music Festival on Monday.

The competition invites amateur choirs of all ages to take part, and competing choirs have to sing two contrasting pieces, one of which had to be entirely unaccompanied.

Adjudicator Jane Wilkinson, a graduate of the Royal College of Music, decided The Woodford Singers were the most impressive performers on the day and awarded them first place.

The Stratford and East London Music Festival is the country’s oldest music and drama festival. It runs until next Saturday.
