A new wildlife garden at Chadwell Primary School will enable pupils to grow their own vegetables and enjoy lessons outdoors.
The open space which was funded by a £10,000 grant was completed by landscaping company Russell and Son.
Liz Cohen, deputy head at Chadwell Primary, High Road, said pupils are excited by the transformation of the space.
She said: “Pupils can now observe butterflies, birds and fish on a regular basis at school and are excited about using the garden in lessons, when writing and painting.”
The landscapers designed the garden to encourage interactive learning.
For example, notice boards are erected with the names of various plants and practical activities are encouraged, such as searching for certain types of insects.
Part of the inspiration behind the garden’s construction was a new food directive, encouraging pupils at the school to eat more vegetables.
The result has been dedicating pockets of space in the garden to teachers and pupils to grow their own food.
