Students from a Chadwell Heath school have donated more than 100 along with food, clothes and everyday items to a charity for vulnerable women.
The group of Health and Social Care students and their friends at Mayfield School, in Pedley Road, decided to fundraise for Ashiana.
The charity helps women from Asian, Turkish and Iranian communities get help if suffering from domestic violence.
Teacher Judith Heaven started the project.
She said: “I really feel that with a subject like health, the students should be out in the community doing things.
“They did research and one student suggested we do something to help women, so we chose Ashiana.”
Ashiana provides “culturally-sensitive” advice, support and safe housing, and aims to raise awareness of the issue.
Student Nazihah Jahan said: “In today’s society young people are mostly portrayed negatively because of the riots last year, so taking part in this fundraising shows one of the many positive contributions that young people make to their community.”
The director of the charity received the 115 and donations on Friday (6).
