Valentines High School sixth former Alizeh Moin has got a lot on.

The 16-year-old takes an active role in the community. As well as being a member of the student parliament, and a house captain, she has completed her National Citizens Service and silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

On Saturdays Alizeh volunteers at a local care home, assisting residents with dementia to eat their lunch, and engage in stimulating activities such as knitting, mental maths, art, and puzzles. She said that she enjoys interacting with the residents and hopes to continue her visits for “a long time”.

Although Alizeh is not sure what she is going to do when she finishes school, she is certainly not lazy in her decision making. On the day she was interviewed by the Recorder she had received a malaria vaccine in preparation for a two-week solo trip to get work experience at “Pakistan’s second best hospital and research centre”, Ziauddin Hospital.

Alizeh has family in Pakistan, however the hospital will be providing accommodation for her stay. She described herself as “nervous but excited”.

Alizeh is considering studying chemistry at University College London.

She has also participated in a Youth Leadership Programme, in which she debated problems in the area, such as radicalisation. Alizeh particularly enjoyed a three day residential trip to the University of Warwick to discuss extremism, and receiving training at an army base.

To top it off, Alizeh is a student learning consultant. Students in this position interview prospective teachers, and give feedback that helps the school in Cranbrook Road, Ilford, to decide on a candidate.

She also volunteers at Gants Hill Library, assisting children with their reading, and helped run an arts and crafts club over the summer.

The Young Citizen Awards are run by the Recorder in conjunction with Redbridge Rotary Club and are sponsored by The Exchange shopping centre, Ilford, which provides each monthly winner with a £30 gift card.

The Young Citizen of the

Year will be crowned at next year’s Mayor’s Community Awards.

You can nominate any person from Redbridge, as long as they are under 25, by emailing lindsay.jones@archant.co.uk
