A burst water main caused traffic chaos in Ilford town centre this morning.

The one way system on the A118 was reduced to one lane for repair work and queues were reported around Ilford Hill, Chapel Road, Cranbrook Road and Winston Way approaching the roundabout.

Essex and Suffolk Water engineers were called to the burst in Chapel Road at 4am and carried out emergency repairs through the night.

A spokesman said: “Essex amd Suffolk Water works very hard to minimise disruption to traffic on the roads when carrying out essential emergency repair work.”

“The repair is now completed and it is hoped the traffic lane restrictions put in place will be removed by the end of today.”
