Phone lines across Ilford and Gants Hill have been down this morning after a failure at a power exchange.
BT said it did not know how many of its 20,000 phone customers in Ilford have been affected.
A spokesman added: “The area affected is wide and includes Ilford and Gants Hill, and other areas in London such as Highams Park.
“Most phone lines are back on now or will be back on very soon.”
The failure, which is only affecting phone lines, happened at around 9.30am.
