Communications company BT has been fined 1,500 for starting roadworks in Goodmayes after they were denied permission to dig up the road by Transport for London (TfL).

The roadworks in Eastern Avenue, near Barley Lane, took place in May last year, after BT applied for a road work permit which was turned down by TfL due to implications for traffic.

But despite this BT continued with its plans.

TfL’s managing director for surface transport Leon Daniels said: “Roadworks offences by any utility company cause significant disruption to road users, as well as having a knock-on effect to businesses across London.

“Those companies should be aware that we will continue to prosecute where infringements occur and will continue to work to further reduce roadworks disruption across London,” he added.

A BT spokesman confirmed the events and added: “BT Openreach takes any infringement seriously and we are working hard to ensure there are no further lapses.”
