A hero police officer was taken to hospital after injuring himself saving a 18-month-old baby trapped in a car.

Pc Simon Waite was on duty in Perth Road, Gants Hill, on Sunday afternoon when he found a distraught mother had accidently locked her son in her car.

The officer knocked through the window on the driver’s side with a hammer.

The 42-year-old described the scene: “As the glass smashed several shards of glass got into my hand.”

Despite the injuries he managed to rescue the baby and return the crying boy to his mother.

Pc Waite was taken to King George Hospital, in Goodmayes, to have his wounds bandaged, and he returned to full duties this week.
