The former Bodgers site has been bought and plans for a 42-storey tower have been unveiled.

The store in Station Road, Ilford, which closed in February, has been bought by Access Self Storage, which plans to convert the space into 380 private rented apartments with office and commercial units at the bottom.

The company also bought the former Recorder building in High Road, Ilford, with a plan to build 144 flats.

Jonathan Stevenson, head of development, said both projects are long-term investments.

“I hope they can really help Ilford,” he said. “I say that hand on heart - we are not looking to develop them quickly and turn them around for profit, we will be here for a long time.

“We know there is a real need for housing in Ilford and we are really excited about the development.”

The Bodgers site will comprise of studio, one and two bedroom, privately rented apartments and is targeted at young professionals.

The Recorder site will be “100per cent affordable” and lends itself to family sized housing and play space.

“Across the two sites, 35pc affordable housing is provided and this exceeds what has been achieved in recent developments in Ilford,” he said. Residents have the opportunity consult on the proposals at the Bodgers store today (Thursday, June 14) between 2pm and 8pm.
