Archant

Children dressed up and danced as Hindu deities were taken around a school on a chariot.

Idols of Jagannath, an avatar of Lord Krishna, his older brother Balarama and younger sister Subhadra, were taken around Avanti Court Primary School, Carlton Drive, Barkingside, during the procession on Friday.

Ratha Yatra – or chariot festival – marks the story of Jagannath’s visit to a temple in Puri, Odisha, India.

The Hindu school’s finance manager Yogesh Sharma, who organised the event, said the procession was “amazing”.

“It’s the festival of love,” he said.

“It’s a very ancient festival and it’s a way to express our love for Krishna.

“The children get to learn about the faith and they work in groups to create art and they learn about Hindu values such as respect, integrity and honesty.”

Redbridge Mayor Cllr Barbara White also attended the event.

Yogesh said: “The children were were very happy – they look forward to it every year.”
