The elderly man injured when his car collided with a tree is now in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
Police, ambulance crew and firefighters were called shortly after 10am to Civic Way yesterday.
The victim was taken to an east London hospital along with a woman in her 80s who sustained minor injuries, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said.
