The NHS trust which operates King George Hospital in Barley Lane has been recognised for its commitment to caring for people with dementia.
The Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) was awarded a certificate and a cash injection for its “outstanding commitment” to a Health Education England (HEE) project to give staff improved dementia training.
A target of training 854 staff members in a month was set by HEE. The cash will be spent on dementia initiatives within the BHRUT.
Stephen Burgess, BHRUT’s medical director, said: “Around 25 per cent of people admitted to our hospitals have problems with confusion or dementia.
“It is vitally important that staff understand the issues and know how to care for them appropriately.
“I am delighted that we have been recognised for the training we are giving to our doctors and nurses.
“We are committed to continuing the programme to ensure that all of our clinical staff have been trained in dementia.”
