Peter Ward stopped by at Mayfield School to chat to pupils about his debut adventure Dragon Horse.

The novel, set in Ancient China, sees two brothers embroiled in a battle against the Shadow-without-name, which attempts to escape from its imprisonment using the power of the famous dragon horses.

As well as enjoying a question and answer session with the author, the students had the opportunity to try on traditional clothes from the era.

Katie Dwight, an English teacher at the school, in Pedley Road, Goodmayes, said: “His visit was a great success and the students really enjoyed listening to him speak about China and the ancient Silk Road.

“They had lots of questions to ask him and showed some good prior knowledge of Chinese history. It was an inspirational afternoon.”

Peter’s visit was organised as part of the school’s involvement in the Premier League Reading Stars project, which aims to inspire youngsters to read more and improve their literacy skills.

The initiative is a partnership between the league and the National Literacy Trust.
