Any election candidates appearing to stir up prejudices should be reported, says an anti-discrimination group.

The Redbridge Equalities and Community Council (RECC) is asking residents to inform it about any leaflets, posters, speeches or other behaviour by parties, candidates or canvassers which seek to foster prejudice and hate over race, national origin, disability and more.

Any material should be sent to RECC or the police, as it may be illegal.

Chairman Diana Neslen said: “Politicians and those who aspire to be our representatives should show leadership by working to build bridges between diverse groups to strengthen our community, rather than trying to divide us.”

Residents can contact the group by calling 020 8551 8178 on a weekday or 07847 829991 between 6pm and midnight, or by emailing office1@redbridgeequalities.org.uk.

It can also be contacted by post to c/o Gants Hill United Reformed Church, 39 Woodford Avenue, Ilford, IG2 6UH.

The RECC is writing to candidates or their parties asking them to sign a compact to promote equality and oppose prejudice.

Their responses will be put on public record.
