Orient goalkeeper Ben Alnwick has left the club by mutual consent after unspecified personal reasons blighted his time at Brisbane Road.

The former Charlton Athletic stopper made a solitary appearance for the O’s after signing on transfer deadline day in January.

Alnwick conceded a last minute winner to former Orient striker Alex Revell in a 2-1 defeat at Rotherham United before the club announced he had been signed off for personal reasons.

Orient chief executive Matt Porter said: “Unfortunately the move did not work out in the way that either the player or the club would have wanted and so we have come to an agreement with Ben that it is best if we part ways.

“Sometimes these things happen and it’s not something that anyone could have seen happening, particularly so soon in to his time with us, but we have moved on and I’m sure Ben will too.”

The 27-year-old is one of five goalkeepers used by Orient this season but the situation between the sticks has looked stronger with Eldin Jakupovic coming back on loan from Hull and Jamie Jones returning to the bench for the first time in three months last weekend.

Alnwick, who enjoyed a loan spell at Brisbane Road in 2011, added: “I’m sorry for how things have worked out but I’d like to thank the club for their support throughout this time and wish them all the best for the future.”
