Police and the public have been praised for acts of professionalism and bravery, including saving lives, capturing knifemen and �discovering firearms, at a prize-giving in Redbridge.

Sgt Louise Thomas was praised for saving the life of a motorcyclist after an �accident in Green Lane, �Ilford, in August 2009.

Shane Horne was lying in the road unconscious when she gave emergency first aid and got him breathing again until an ambulance arrived.

Members of the public were praised by Borough Commander Det Ch Supt Sue Williams at Redbridge �Police’s commendation ceremony at the Jack Carter �Pavilion in Fencepiece Road, Barkingside.

They included Redbridge Victim Support staff members Afshan Rasheed and Zulekha Waheed who helped a stabbed man survive in �Ilford in March last year. They dialled 999 and took �instructions before an ambulance arrived.

James Dowling, 56, chased a man who had snatched a purse from a woman along Leicester Road, Wanstead, in April.

Mr Dowling caught the 18-year-old, who dropped a kitchen knife during the chase, and then waited for police officers to arrest him.

Pcs Adrian Towler and Justin Nicholson-Wisbey from Fullwell Safer Neighbourhood Team, recovered an illegal firearm.

They had been travelling along Forest Road, Hainault in December when they �noticed two men put something in a hedge. They found a handgun and balaclava and the men were arrested.
