Accident toll at Newbury Park station death spot

Transport chiefs are reviewing safety at a Newbury Park junction which saw a man killed last week and four people seriously injured in the past three years.

FOUR people have been seriously injured in three years in road smashes at the same junction where a dad-of-two was killed on New Year’s Day.

Transport for London (TfL) has said it will review the safety of Eastern Avenue’s junction with Newbury Park station, after the Recorder revealed motorists use it to make “reckless” U-turns.

And it has now emerged that between September 2007 and August 2010, four serious accidents were recorded at that junction, seriously hurting four people.

On New Year’s Day, 69-year-old Dusan Danilovic died when the Citroen Picasso he was travelling in ended up on its side after a four-car pile-up.

The car was travelling to Newbury Park station.

Grandfather-of-one Mr Danilovic was a lollipop man at Crowlands School, London Road, Romford.

Mr Danilovic’s grieving wife Jacky – who was driving the car at the time of the accident – has spoken of her loss.

The 61-year-old said: “From all the tributes we have had he seemed a much loved man. He’ll be badly missed.”

His daughter Claire Danilovic, 29, said: “We loved him, he’s really badly missed by all who knew him.”

Mr Danilovic, of Cromer Road, Romford, was pronounced dead at the scene while five others were taken to hospital.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to the road crash to come forward.

They are particularly keen to trace as potential witnesses the occupants of a dark-coloured car travelling behind the Citroen prior to the accident.

Police say the car was turning towards Newbury Park station’s entrance.

Residents who have spoken to the Recorder about the junction have said U-turns are a common sight.

Pankaj Putni, 50 ,of Hertford Road – which runs alongside Eastern Avenue – described the junction as “very, very dangerous”.

A spokesman for TfL said it will review whether further safety improvements can be made, adding: “Clear signage is located at the junction with Newbury Park station, stating that it is illegal to carry out U-turns at this location.”
