A-level results: Ursuline Academy Ilford students raise the bar

Hardworking pupils at the Ursuline Academy, Ilford, raised the bar with yesterday’s A-level results.

The percentage of grades marked at A* to C shot up from 73 to 85, while more students gained A* to B grades – 58 per cent of all grades compared with 53 last year – and more than a fifth of all grades were A* to A.

“Congratulations to everyone,” said deputy head Keran Reilly. “Results are up on last year and I’m really proud of the girls.”

The cohort includes three aspiring medical students.

Outgoing head girl Maria Ekundayo, 18, will now head to Bath to study natural sciences after scoring two A grades, a B and a C.

“I’m relieved – I didn’t sleep last night,” she said. “I had to go out with my sister to distract myself.

“Getting these grades has motivated me to come out with a good degree.”

Miriam Animashaun, 18, is another success story, gaining an A and two Bs in philosophy, maths and economics and business.

There’s no secret, according to principal Alex Burke.

“It’s just about hard work,” he said, “and keeping on their backs the whole time.”
