A raft of measures to reduce the risk of the River Roding flooding have won the backing of Redbridge Council.
During a meeting of the cabinet on Tuesday in Redbridge Town Hall, High Road, Ilford, members agreed to press ahead with a joint �3million bid together with the Environment Agency to Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).
The money would help fund a storage area at Dartnell’s Field, Chigwell.
Pumping stations adjacent to the Charlie Brown’s and Win Brook roundabout would also be installed to reduce the risk of surface water flooding.
The Environment Agency’s draft strategy to bolster protection at the river also includes plans for a flood storage area in Shonks Hill, Essex, in around 10 years.
Cllr Shoaib Patel, cabinet member for environment, also said the Environment Agency planned to stop maintenance at some parts of the river to help slow water in the upper Roding and reduce the maximum height of the river as it flows through Redbridge.
The council will find out if its joint bid to Defra has been successful sometime around May.
