Ilford’s rich history was celebrated at the heart of British politics with a centenary event at the Houses of Parliament.

Marking 100 years since Ilford’s Charter Day, the event on October 21, was hosted by Ilford South MP Jas Athwal and attended by business, education, and community representatives from the area.

Charter Day marks the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Ilford on October 21, 1926. The Royal Charter had been issued on August 24 and came into force on November 9, 1926, transforming Ilford Urban District into the Municipal Borough of Ilford.

Jas Athwal, MP for Ilford South, wrote: "I am proud to have called Ilford home for the past 56 years. Ilford is my life; the place I call home."

Guests were given a tour of Parliament, met Mr Athwal, and took part in photos to mark the occasion. A commemorative book produced by DigiPix was signed by the MP and attendees.

Cyril Bekoe, manager of Ilford BID, said: "This was a meaningful tribute to Ilford’s history, businesses, and remarkable residents."

The programme also included a special birthday tribute and message for an Ilford resident aged 101 years and two months and a poem by Gordon Hobbs, whose mother and her two siblings were all Ilford residents, and each reached the age of 100. A range of local organisations attended the event.
