A man has been jailed after causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at a scene in Ilford.
Mayan Hirani, 26 (13.08.1999), of Grange Crescent in Chigwell, was sentenced to six years and nine months’ in prison at Woolwich Crown Court yesterday (July 10).
He was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop, as reported by our sister site London Now.
On March 16, 2024 Mohammed Furuk Ahmed parked his vehicle to make a food delivery in Ilford.
As he crossed Ley Street, he was struck by a Range Rover travelling at between 64 and 68mph - more than twice the speed limit.
Mr Ahmed died in hospital the following day.
Hirani failed to stop following the collision and drove away.
The Range Rover was traced to a garage in east London and Hirani later admitted he had been the driver.
Detective Constable Tristan Hunter, who led the investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain with Mr Ahmed’s family and loved ones, who continue to live with the devastating consequences of his death.
“While no sentence can undo the pain caused by Mr Ahmed’s passing, I hope this outcome provides some measure of justice for his family and demonstrates our commitment to holding dangerous drivers accountable.”
In addition to the custodial sentence, Hirani was disqualified from driving for five years and must pass an extended re-test before being permitted to drive again.
